In designing and making furniture for the church or chapel we have three considerations: the architecture, the space available and the way in which clergy and congregation use the space. In the example illustrated we were offered a blank canvas of a beautiful space with cast in-situ concrete walls and floor to ceiling stained glass windows by internationally renowned artist Hughie O’Donoghue. In discussion with the architect and client client we opted for traditional materials, Oak and Bronze, combined in simple and contemporary designs, complimented by our leather upholstered DC chair in Oak.

We consider the DC chair a classic of Irish furniture design and we were very pleased to have the opportunity of specifying it for the Bon Secours Hospital Chapel, Galway. This handcrafted chair was chosen for its quality of workmanship, premium materials and subtle design details. To compliment the chair Tadhg’s studio designed the altar furniture in Oak, bronze and gold leaf, applying the same care and attention to detail evident in the DC chair. It was a pleasure to work with Tadhg and his team and may another opportunity arise in the future Hugh Kelly, Hugh Kelly Architects
